Until today, when I pick it up and make that decision — I am finally going to read Anna Karenina. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who have also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are behind this new version of Boris Pasternak's breathtakingly wonderful novel. Many novels and stories by Tolstoy have been translated in recent years to great acclaim. It also made me recently read Anna Karenina, the other Tolstoy epic translated by Pevear and Volokhonsky. I learned that there are 3 major translations: constance garnett, lousie and aylmer maude, and richard pevear and larissa volokhonsky. And it has sat on my shelf ever since. Translated by Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky (Vintage). And indeed they If you are intimidated by the idea of reading Anna Karenina, a Great Work of Literature that is 900 pages long and Russian to boot--well, it's not nearly as difficult as I had imagined that it would be. (There was additionally the competition with my wife, who read Anna Karenina while I read War and Peace.
